Iron Skull Gym did not start as a business idea.
It grew from training, shared effort and a belief that people progress further when they feel they belong.
The idea for Iron Skull Gym formed in the spring of 2021, but the roots go back further.
Before Iron Skull Gym existed, I was teaching Krav Maga as part of Tactical Defence Krav Maga, running regular classes in Cumbernauld and teaching across the Central Belt of Scotland. Alongside that, I was running my own digital agency business.
At that point, teaching and training were already a big part of my life. Iron Skull Gym did not appear suddenly. It grew naturally out of that experience.
The doors officially opened in August 2021.
Health and confidence had already started to slip, but the real moment came in a very ordinary way.
I remember struggling just to catch my breath while tying my shoes. That was the point where it became impossible to ignore.
Around the same time, I was dropping my daughter off at Taekwondo classes. Watching her train sparked a simple thought. I wanted something for myself too.
I found Krav Maga and went to an intro class expecting something familiar. What I found instead was honesty. My idea of my own and my family’s personal safety was unrealistic. I had always managed to avoid violent situations by talking, but I realised if talking is will no solve the problem, I’m useless.
For the first time, I understood I was not as capable as I thought I was.
What kept me coming back was not the techniques.
It was the people.
In the past, I could usually stick to training for a few months. Holidays would come, training would stop and it would never fully restart.
This time was different.
During holidays, I noticed I missed the people I trained with. Even while enjoying time off, I was looking forward to getting back on the mats. That sense of belonging was new, and it mattered.
The shift happened during my second grading, P2.
I was prepared and things were starting to click. For the first time, I could see how everything connected. That was the moment I realised training was not a phase. It was a lifelong journey.
From that point on, training became daily. Sometimes twice a day. Not out of obligation, but because it became part of who I was.
I joined the General Instructor Course initially for my own development, to understand the Krav Maga system more deeply.
While helping with classes, I realised something unexpected. Teaching felt natural. Not just running sessions, but finding ways to help each person understand from their own perspective.
Around this time, my wife started attending my classes. What began as simply training together quickly became something more. She became the most consistent person on the mats, training more than anyone else.
Over time, she qualified as a KMG Instructor and later as a StrongFirst SFG. Today, she is a core part of Iron Skull Gym, both as a coach and as someone who represents the values the gym is built on.
Iron Skull Gym has always been a shared effort.
Kids programmes were never an afterthought.
I believe kids are the future. Seeing a steady decline in physical activity among young people made the decision simple. If we can plant a love for movement, training or simply being active, that matters.
My own daughter has trained since she was five. She is now almost seventeen. Watching her grow through training makes every effort worth it.
Confidence comes with it, but that is a byproduct. The real goal is helping young people enjoy movement and feel part of something positive.
Community at Iron Skull Gym is honest and human.
Mutual respect is non negotiable.
There is a lot of laughter.
A bit of sarcasm.
Straightforward conversations.
People train hard, learn properly and enjoy doing it together. Ego does not last here. It usually removes itself.
In the future, I want Iron Skull Gym to be known as more than a gym.
A second home.
A family.
A sanctuary where problems quiet down.
A place where people can train, breathe and belong.
If any part of this story feels familiar, you are probably in the right place.
Iron Skull Gym exists for people who want to train properly, support each other and grow together.
This helps us send you to the right place.
